I am a big fan of enjoying salad as a meal, especially when the summer months arrive. It’s why I also have a keto 7 layer salad that is a favorite on the site.
Both these salads make enough for a crowd or can be made in individual mason jars as part of your weekly keto meal planning.

Keto Cobb Salad
This hearty salad is sure to keep you full for hours since it’s a complete meal that is packed with protein and low in carbs.
A classic Cobb salad is an American salad that is served as an entree.
Made with sliced chicken, chopped lettuce, tomatoes, crispy bacon, hard-boiled eggs, avocado, and blue cheese crumbles.
Basically, it’s a delicious salad the whole family will enjoy.
I also like to add shredded sharp cheddar cheese to our healthy cobb salad recipe for more flavor.
It’s true that Cobb salads are, by nature, a low-carb entree since it is packed with protein, low in carbs, and high in fiber.
Unfortunately, some variations of Cobb salads fail in their choice of dressing or, even worse, in using breaded fried chicken strips.
My recipe is keto-friendly because of the homemade blue cheese dressing and the fact that I cook the chicken in bacon grease, which increases the level of fat. Winning!
The best thing is that since I use sautéed chicken breast instead of breading, it’s also a gluten-free salad.
It’s a great option for anyone on a low-carb diet searching for a healthy meal.
What Is A Cobb Salad?
Ever wonder what makes a Cobb salad a Cobb salad and not just a chef salad? Well, the traditional Cobb salad’s origins go back to 1937, when it was created for the Brown Derby restaurant in Hollywood, CA.
It’s named after the owner of the restaurant Robert Howard Cobb, who cleverly threw together a few leftovers from the night before. His creativity is what birthed the Cobb salad so many have come to love.

You’ll begin by preparing the blue cheese dressing. To do so, start by mashing the blue cheese crumbles and heavy cream in a medium-sized bowl. Then, add mayonnaise, sour cream, vinegar, lemon juice, minced parsley, granulated sugar substitute, and spices to the mixture. Set it aside for later use.

Moving on to the Cobb salad, begin by boiling the eggs, peeling them, and setting them aside. Next, chop the lettuce and set it aside, followed by slicing the cherry tomatoes, onions, and avocados.
Toss the sliced avocados in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to prevent browning, and set them aside. Fry the bacon slices over medium-low heat until crispy, then let them cool, crumble, and reserve the bacon fat.
Season the chicken breasts with salt, pepper, and paprika, then slice them into strips. Fry the sliced chicken breasts in the reserved bacon fat over medium-high heat until they are cooked through and golden brown, about 10 minutes. Once done, set aside.
To assemble the Cobb salad, place the lettuce, chicken, bacon, hard-boiled egg, tomatoes, onions, avocado, blue cheese, and cheddar cheese in rows on a large platter.
Allow individuals to serve themselves and drizzle the prepared blue cheese dressing over the salad just before eating.
Leftover salad does not keep very well, which is why I have included instructions on how to store this salad in a mason jar at the bottom of this post and the recipe card.
Is Blue Cheese Dressing Keto
If you are wondering if a blue cheese dressing is considered keto, the answer is maybe. This is because the number of carbs in a blue cheese dressing will vary greatly from brand to brand or recipe.
Since this cobb salad includes a homemade blue cheese dressing that is void of sugar, it is considered keto-friendly.
What Is The Best Keto-Friendly Cobb Salad Dressing?
Typically if you order a cobb salad in a restaurant it will be served with a balsamic dressing. The problem is that it will probably be one that is loaded with sugar.
The same problem occurs if you use a store-bought balsamic dressing instead of a creamy dressing, not to mention that it usually lists canola oil as the first ingredient.
This is why I like making homemade salad dressings so that I know exactly what ingredients are in them.
As far as which dressing is best for keto cobb salad, my preference is a blue cheese dressing. I just feel it naturally goes better with the blue cheese crumbles that are typical in this type of salad.
Keto Cobb Salad In A Jar
You can meal prep by serving the Cobb salad in six large quart mason jars.
To do so, add two tablespoons of the blue cheese dressing to the bottom of each jar.
Next place the chicken strips that have been chopped, tomatoes, eggs, blue cheese, cheddar cheese, onion, bacon, and finally the chopped lettuce.
If meal prepping I recommend leaving out the avocados since they are likely to turn brown. Once ready to serve, shake the salad from the jar into a bowl.
The Cobb salad in mason jars keeps well for up to 3 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
