How To Make A Gluten-Free Salisbury Steak That Is Keto
Preparing the Steak Patties
To make the perfect keto Salisbury steak recipe, start by combining the ground beef, eggs, chopped onion, minced garlic, Parmesan cheese, Worcestershire sauce, sugar-free ketchup, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and dried oregano in a large mixing bowl.
Note that I do not add thickening powder to this low carb Salisbury steak because the combination of parmesan cheese and eggs does the trick beautifully.
Mix the meat mixture well to ensure that all the ingredients are evenly distributed.
Once the mixture is ready, form it into four oval patties using your hands. Ensure that each patty is approximately 3/4 inch thick to ensure even cooking.
Next, heat a large, non-stick skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. Add the patties once the skillet is hot and cook for 3-4 minutes per side until brown. Once cooked, transfer the patties to a plate and proceed to make the gluten-free mushroom gravy.
Mastering the Gluten-Free Creamy Mushroom Gravy
Would you like to save this?
To make the gluten-free mushroom gravy, reduce the heat to medium on the same skillet used to cook the patties. Add the butter to the meat drippings, and cook the sliced mushrooms until they are tender and browned.
Next, add the garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, heavy cream, and cream cheese to the skillet. Cook the mixture for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy has thickened to your liking.
Here again, note that you can have a rich mushroom gravy without thickening it with flour.
Finally, place patties back into the skillet and cook for about 3 minutes until the steaks are heated through and the gravy is hot.
Garnishing For Enhanced Flavor
Garnishing your Salisbury steak can add an extra layer of flavor and texture to your meal. Here are a few options to consider:
- Fresh herbs: Chopped parsley, thyme, or rosemary can add a pop of color and freshness to your plate.
- Crispy bacon: Crumble some cooked bacon over your steak for a smoky and salty crunch.
- Sautéed onions: Cook thinly sliced onions in the same skillet as your steak for a caramelized and sweet topping.
Can I Substitute Crushed Pork Rinds For Another Ingredient In This Recipe?
You can substitute pork rinds for the same amount of Parmesan cheese. Pork rinds can be crushed and used as a low-carb, gluten-free alternative to breadcrumbs or other binders.
What Sides Pairs Well With A Keto-Friendly Salisbury Steak?
The most traditional side option would be to top the steaks with the mushroom sauce and serve on top of cauliflower mash.
However, roasted vegetables, green beans, cauliflower rice, or a simple side salad are all low in carbs and complement the steak and mushroom gravy flavors.
