Keto Sour Cream Cookies (Sugar Cookies)

These keto sour cream cookies are reminiscent of the old-fashioned cookies many of us grew up on. It’s the type of recipe that was commonly found in church community cookbooks.

It’s a recipe for low-carb cookies that will be perfect for Easter, Christmas, or any time you want a festive option.

This is why I am confident that these keto sour cream cookies will make a lovely addition to your low-carb holiday cookie platter.

In my opinion, when it comes to choosing the perfect dessert option for the holidays, keto cookies should be at the top of the list.

If, like me, you grew up in the 1970s, then you might remember McCall’s sour cream cookie recipe, which consisted of simple ingredients.

That recipe produced a light, soft, and delicious option. But, of course, it was also loaded with carbs.

Well, that’s the flavor profile I was after. Thankfully, this girl was able to produce just that for you. Consider this the keto version of that popular recipe.

I had to do some significant tweaking since keto baking is NOTHING like traditional baking, but this girl is quite proud of this low-carb version, and I’m hoping you will also fall in love with it.

Low-Carb Cream Cookies

This sour cream cookie recipe uses almond flour, which ensures that it’s low in carbs and grain—and gluten-free.

If you want a soft-baked cookie made with coconut flour, I recommend you try my keto cream cheese cookies and use the icing from this recipe.

The sour cream in the batter and icing of these almond flour cookies will give you the tang you crave and taste as close to the real thing as possible.

Since this recipe uses almond flour, if you prefer to use it, I recommend you visit our keto almond flour recipes for more delicious options.

Perhaps you are not in the habit of adding sour cream to your cookie recipes, but trust me when I tell you that it works.

Because when you add a little bit of sour cream to cookie dough, it adds a depth of richness that is simply unmatched.

It’s a recipe for keto sugar cookies that will silence your sweet tooth and keep you from feeling like your missing out on Christmas cookies.

The sour cream gives these cookies a slight tang and the texture of soft-baked cookies, making them flat-out irresistible!

Plus, this recipe for low-carb, old-fashioned sour cream cookies comes together quickly and can be customized effortlessly.

Feel free to use this cookie recipe as is, replace the sour cream-colored icing with a sprinkle of confectioner’s sugar substitute, or skip the icing entirely.

I opted to tint the icing with food coloring just for the fun factor, but this is also totally optional.

As an added bonus, these low-carb sour cream cookies require no rolling or cutting. That’s a great benefit because those types of recipes can be a bit more temperamental.

The only thing this keto “sugar” cookie dough requires is a little chill time in the refrigerator. Easy peasy.

The following are the ingredients you’ll need. A printable recipe card is available at the bottom of the page.

Is Sour Cream Keto?

Regular, full-fat sour cream is made from cream and has a higher fat content than carbs. As a result, it’s considered keto-friendly.

Low-fat or nonfat sour cream, on the other hand, is not acceptable. When incorporated into recipes to increase the amount of fat, full-fat content

It also delivers a tangy flavor due to the fermentation, which contributes to its low-carb content.

Just how many carbs are in sour cream, will depend on the brand and type you choose and the amount consumed.

On average, one tablespoon of full-fat sour cream has 0.6 net carbs.

How To Make Keto Sour Cream Holiday Cookies

To make these keto-friendly sour cream cookies, you’ll start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees and lining two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Then, you’ll measure and sift the almond flour and set it aside.

Combine the softened butter, granulated sugar substitute, and vanilla extract in a medium-sized bowl using an electric mixer. Then mix until light and fluffy.

To this mixture, add the two eggs, one at a time, plus the sour cream. Then combine the cookie batter until well incorporated.

Next, add the sifted almond flour, baking powder, and salt to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

Place the cookie dough in the refrigerator and allow it to chill for a minimum of 30 minutes before baking.

Using a small cookie scoop, place the dough on a lightly greased baking sheet or parchment-lined sheet.

Bake the cookies in the preheated oven until lightly brown around the edges, for about 10–12 minutes.

Allow the cookies to fully cool on a baking rack before adding the icing for about 15 minutes.

Keto Sour Cream Icing

To make the sour cream icing, combine the sour cream, vanilla extract, and confectioner’s sugar substitute in a small bowl.

Then, divide the icing depending on the number of colors you want. To the icing, you’ll add 2-3 drops of food coloring.

Next, you’ll add the icing to fully cooled cookies and allow the icing to set.

Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Freeze without icing for up to 3 weeks for the best results.

Sugar Substitute Options

When it comes to choosing your sugar substitute for these keto cookies, I have several options for you to pick from.

My number one choice is Lakanto Monk Fruit because the texture and flavor are what I have found to be the closest to real sugar and because the flavor fools your taste buds like nothing else I’ve found in the market.

Having said that, I’m also partial to the brand Swerve, which is an erythritol blend. Similar to Lakanto, it uses sugar alcohol and has a 0% impact on blood sugar.

I don’t like using stevia because I am sensitive to the aftertaste. But if that’s not the case for you, you could use the stevia and erythritol-based brand Pyure for this cookie recipe.

However, if you go this route, you will want to use half the amount called for in this recipe since it’s much sweeter.

When it comes to icing, you will have to use a confectioner’s sugar substitute. Both Lakanto and Swerve have great ones.

Lastly, if you can’t easily find a more natural granulated sugar substitute, you can also use Splenda with great success.
