Have you noticed how much news there is about being in ketosis? Seems like everywhere you turn someone is talking about keto, ketones or a ketogenic diet. No? Well, trust me you will. People are starting to see their health transform because of the power of being in therapeutic ketosis and they are not being shy about their experience.
What Comprises A True Ketogenic Diet?
Traditionally a ketogenic diet is a diet thought to contain less than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day or 5 to 10 percent of total daily calories. With an intake of dietary fat of as high as 85 percent. Another way of saying it is that it’s a diet that has four times more fat than carbs, with protein levels managed so that 90 percent of calories are coming from fat. A ketogenic diet lowers carbohydrates and raises fats with the goal of producing ketones, fat for fuel.
One Size Does Not Fit All
Although it is tempting to say that a ketogenic diet is just a diet that is 80 percent fat, 15 percent protein, and 5 percent carbohydrate, this is an oversimplification. Why? Because counting macros alone does not take into account individual differences like physical activity, overall health and calorie intake. You can’t compare a body builder doing a ketogenic diet to the average joe who just wants to lose 20 pounds. There is a difference in doing a keto diet for weight loss reasons versus for athletic performance.
Keto or Low Carb?
What’s the fundamental difference between a low carb diet and ketogenic diet? A ketogenic diet is related to a low carb diet, the same way second or third cousins are. Although there are similarities, a keto diet has a higher level of healthy fats. Why choose a diet higher in fat? Because a diet that is both low in carbs and higher in fat will produce more ketones. More fat causes satiety, making a keto plan easier to adhere to.
A low carb diet can also help individuals lose weight and gain health benefits. However, a low carb diet may not be low enough in carbs and high enough in fats to produce ketones endogenously (meaning your liver produces the ketones when breaking down the fatty-acids)
Let Your Goals Guide You
Both a keto and low carb diet can be beneficial but choosing what is best for you should be based on your goals.
Randy and I have been on a low carb ketogenic diet since January of 2014, and we are loving the results. We have done both a low carb diet and strict keto with great results with both. One of the things we enjoy the most about eating a low carb keto diet is that we use fat as our primary fuel versus glucose. Doing so gives us boundless energy and our health seems to improve with each passing year.
What Exactly Is Ketosis?
Ketosis is, basically, the state of having elevated ketone levels, typically above 0.5 millimole per liter, or mmol/L How a person achieves ketosis and how high the ketone readings are will vary from individual to individual.
Think of it as jet fuel for the body. Our bodies are created to run on either glucose or ketones. This is a natural process and how civilization survived periods of great food shortage. When our bodies burn fat for fuel we produce three bi-products of fat breakdown, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), acetoacetate (ACA) and acetone. These bi-products are called ketones.
Breaking Down Of Fatty Acids
On a low carb keto diet, the body looks for alternative fuel, and it turns to fatty acids and fat stores to provide energy. The liver breaks down the fat, and releases ketones into the blood to be used by the brain and other organs to produce the energy we need. On a keto diet you burn fat more effectively.
Ketones A Superior Fuel Source
Using ketones is a far superior fuel for our brains than glucose. What’s more we have the added assurance that because ketones are water-soluble, whatever excess amounts of ketones may be in our system is eliminated through the urine naturally. When in therapeutic ketosis we are using this optimal fuel, which translates into better energy, better sugar levels, better sleep, the list can go on. I encourage to look at the scientific data coming out from sites like Ketogeniccom or books like The Ketogenic Bible

Health Benefits Of Ketosis
It’s no wonder that when Randy and I traded our carb-loaded diet for a low carb one, our bodies began to see the healing properties of being in ketosis. We may not have always been in a state of ketosis when we first began, but we certainly experienced enough of it to recognize the benefits. We transitioned into a more keto diet simply because we wanted to see even greater results in our health. There is something remarkable that happens when your health transforms. It’s like all of a sudden you want to keep improving.
To be in a true state of ketosis our blood ketone level should be between 1.0 and 3.0. Any level lower than 1.0 and we just don’t get to experience all the benefits.
Most people confuse ketosis with ketoacidosis. However, ketoacidosis only occurs when the body is not responding to insulin at all, as in type I diabetes. In this state you see ketone levels of 20.0-30.0, this of course is dangerous and nothing like therapeutic ketosis.
Where it becomes a little tricky is not only getting into ketosis but staying in that ideal 0.5-3.0 ketone level range. Frankly, it can be frustrating at times because we can get kicked out of ketosis rather quickly with a small meal slip up. It then can take days, sometimes weeks to get back into this ideal state. So what’s the solution

Why Even Take Exogenous Ketones If You Do The Diet Already?

My experience with keto//OS is that for some time I kept hearing people in the keto community rave about how they would raise their ketone levels within an hour of supplementation. This frankly, sounded too good to be true and I wanted to test it for myself.
I put KETO//OS to the test, and to be honest the results of my 5 day experiment shocked me. Within the first hour of drinking Keto//OS I knew I had achieved a higher level of ketosis. My cognition was clearer, I had more energy, my mood was brighter and it even helped me sleep better that night. The only time I felt this level of ketosis was after a day or two of intermittent fasting on liquids alone. However, let’s face it intermittent fasting is not always a practical solution, even if the benefits are remarkable.
My Personal Experience
By the end of my 5 days I was sold and ran to get a month’s worth of KETO//OS. If you have never been in a state of ketosis, you have no idea what you have been missing.
